ABOUT US

HISTORY

United Africa Group was organized in August 1992 by the husband and wife team that are still on its executive board as a means by which to fulfil their vision for new types of African owned businesses in a newly independent African nation. This vision included a commitment to meeting the varied needs of a new and growing nation through a broadly diversified service and investment business portfolio.

The company started by trading in staple food commodities in large volumes; these commodities included sugar, maize meal, cooking oil, rice, and black-eyed beans. In a progressive move, a maize meal factory was established so that the company could oversee the processing, packaging and shipping of the final product to the client.

As part of it’s first 5-year plan, UAG branched out into supplying the Namibian Defence Force with uniforms, boots, shoes, sports gear and all clothing items required by the military force. This expanded to supplying protective clothing and uniforms to the police, hospitals and schools which led to UAG owning a garment manufacturing plant.

UAG’s next five year plan was fully geared towards adding value, by getting involved in service related businesses by way of asset leasing, pension fund management for the Government, insurance, and the issuance of personalized driving licenses.

In recent years, the company has seized the opportunity to better service in Namibia’s growing tourism sector by branching vigorously into the hospitality industry and entering into partnerships with industry icons Protea Hotels Corporation and Hilton International.

In 2010, the company reached yet another significant milestone with the launch of the Erongo Desalination Plant in Wlotzkasbaken, along Namibia’s west coast. The desalination plant, of equal shareholding by UAG and Areva was initially opened mainly to supply clean water to Areva’s Trekkopje Uranium Mine, but UAG is confident that the Erongo Desalination Plant, and other similar future plants will contribute to addressing water shortages in Namibia.

In addition, UAG is Namibia’s first ever Independent Power Producer (IPP) holder on Wind Farming through a joint corporation between UAG, Sojitz Corporation, a Japanese organization and KOMIPO (Korea Midland Power Co Ltd.).

This venture will be instrumental in helping to solve part of Namibia’s energy crises by becoming a self sufficient, environmentally friendly and pioneering centre of renewable energy in Southern Africa.
